Lawrence Durrell's "Justine"

Justine - Lawrence Durrell

This book contains my absolute favourite literary quote of all time: "Who invented the human heart, I wonder? Tell me, and then show me the place where he was hanged." Justine (the title character) says this around the middle of the book in a moment of despair. At the time I read it (around 1991 or 1992) I was recovering from some unhappy experiences and this sentence hit me like a ton of bricks.
