Laura Kinsale's "Lessons In French"
Beautiful, beautiful story. Juliana and Lady Danielle's reviews say almost everything I would want to say about this book, and much better than I could do.
The only thing I would add is that the book is not just a heartfelt love story but also absolutely hilarious - this is by far the funniest romance I've ever read and one of the funniest books of any genre that I've read. The scenes with Hubert the bull in the house and at the country fair are classic, and very soon into the story you come to realize that whenever Trev and his sidekicks are involved in a situation or making "plans", hilarity and mayhem will ensue. And the competing "lover", Major Sturgeon - one almost feels sorry for him to have to be the butt of so many tricks and jokes (and of Trev and his boxing sidekicks' fists as well), even though he completely deserves most of the abuse he gets.
This was such a treat for me to read after the almost unrelieved grimness of Roberta Gellis' "Roselynde" - cripes, even the love scenes are grim in that one - and the disappointment of Loretta Chase's "Silk is for Seduction".
